Missile silo, site and launcher numbers unknown. Probable construction photo believed to be Beale 851-A and taken below the launcher elevator motor platform and showing an unknown AMF engineer inspecting one of the counterweight locking mechanisms. Behind him, one of the stub rail latches can be seen. The stub rail latches were an extension of the counterweight guide rails and were the parking place for the counterweights when the silo was in the hard condition. The locking assemblies held the counterweights in place upon the stub rails. Taken: circa 1961 Source: Martin Co. - titan group050-1
(2 of 2) Missile silo, site and launcher numbers unknown. Construction photo believed to be Beale 851-A and taken near the personnel elevator, looking from the personnel tunnel toward the elevator doors (elevator car is absent) and crib-to-silo bridge that provided access to the elevator and cribwork. Construction photo of launcher #1 at an unknown site and squadron, most likely Lowry 724th or 725th or Beale 851st. AMF engineer G. Soffer stands on the missile platform which has been raised to the surface. He is shown working with one of the four missile restraining mechanisms where he appears to be removing protective plastic. Four such support and restraining mechanisms held each missile firmly in place on the missile platform until takeoff, the supports pivoting away to clear the airframe after it has been released. In the background at left, the high frequency discone antenna with its distinctive conical shape can be seen. On the right, the entry portal silo doors can be seen standing open. (2 of 2) Unknown AMF engineer about 20' below the silo doors inspects hydraulic lines from the catwalks on face D of the silo cribwork at an unknown site and launcher. Launcher appears to be under construction or undergoing engineering modifications in this photo as evidenced by the safety netting spanning the gaps between the cribwork and silo wall. This photo illustrates the impressive confluence of hydraulic lines and manifolds at this upper level of the cribwork required to drive the many locks, jacks, platforms and other functions of the silo lift system.
