Construction at Beale 851-A, surface, launcher #1. Rigging crew preparing one of the 2 enormous counterweights for the missile launcher elevator system. Essentially a tall, steel bucket filled with lead, markings on the side indicate a height of 14' 10". Counterweight is being lifted into an upright position to measure its weight. Note the uninstalled silo door resting on giant timbers at right. Taken: June 13, 1961 Source: The Martin Co. - titan group003-1
Silo door installation, Southern leaf of silo #1 launcher doors, suspended by heavy gantry crane to position it for installation. Very large hinge shaft is visible at center. Taken: June 28, 1961 Source: Martin Co. - titan group020-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, silo #2. Sections of the missile cribwork are shown here being lowered into the silo (at right) for installation. A large concrete access plug for one of the underground terminals can be seen on the left. Taken: July 24, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group016-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, silo #2. This photo was taken to illustrate an installation "snag" where an existing personnel ladder and an air duct were found to be occupying the same space on the blueprints-- a fact that wasn't apparent until installation of the duct work began. This sort of trouble was a major problem with large projects and required thousands of engineering changes to the missile sites adding thousands of additional man-hours of labor and millions of dollars in cost overruns. Construction at Beale 851-A, equipment terminal #3, level I, showing the hydraulic pumps in place and piping work in progress. Taken: July 24, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group025-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, equipment terminal #1 or #2, level I, showing the hydraulic reservoir in place with uninstalled equipment. The exact terminal # is unknown. Taken: May 29, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group013-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, equipment terminal #1, level I, showing the motor control center and logic racks which controlled equipment in the terminal such as the hydraulic pumps, AC fans and air compressors. Taken: May 29, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group005-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, Equipment Terminal #2, level III showing hydraulic piping, ductwork and cable trays partially installed. Taken: July 24, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group007-1
Missile silo, site and launcher numbers unknown. Believed to be Beale 851-A and taken near the personnel elevator, the purpose of this photo is uncertain, but likely it was taken to document an engineering problem with the installation of plumbing, duct work, electrical runs or other work. Construction at Beale 851-A, silo #1. An enormous gantry crane used to install the silo doors and launcher elevator counterweights. The weights can be seen laying on their sides under the gantry. Taken: May 29, 1961. Source: Martin Co. - titan group019-1
Construction at Beale 851-A, silo #1 showing work stairway and scaffolding, plumbing, ducting and electrical work in launcher silo #1. Safety netting is not in place in this photo since materials and equipment are being actively lowered into the silo by a basket/cage hoisted by cable. Taken: May 29, 1961. Construction at Beale 851-A, surface, launcher #1. This jig was fabricated to allow for weighing of the 2 enormous counterweights for the missile launcher elevator system. Each bracket will be fitted with 1 of 4 load cells to weigh the 2 huge, lead counterweights to be installed at each launcher. Taken: June 13, 1961 Source: The Martin Co.
